On June 17, Marie Michele Del Balso took on the impressive challenge of walking 100,000 steps in a single day and raising $100,000 to support the excellent palliative care services offered at St. Raphael’s.

Compassionate supporters joined her in walking the streets of Montreal in memory of a loved one and to raise funds for the organization. In the end, more than $200,000 was raised thanks to the generosity of over 600 donors.

Marie Michele’s journey began very early in the morning, around 5 a.m., in the Parc-Nature du Bois-de-Liesse. She then went to St. Raphael’s around 11:30 a.m., where she was welcomed by the team and relatives of people who have passed away at the centre; a memorial service in their honor was held at the Centre.
Our music therapist Anne Lacourse performed two songs: Je pars à l’autre bout du monde by Paul Daraîche and Field of Gold by Sting. The group then hung words in honor of people who have left us in the memorial tree next to St. Raphael’s. Together with Marie Michele, the group symbolically walked a few steps in honor of a loved one. Then, Marie Michele resumed her walk and finished her challenge at the end of the evening.

We would like to thank each and every person who took part in the Walk by making a donation, raising funds and talking about the Walk for Dignity and the mission of St. Raphael’s around them. Each of these actions helps us provide free care and services to people living with a life-limiting illness, their loved ones and the bereaved. Thank you so much for your generosity and dedication.
